About me
Carlos Amado (b. 1961, Torres Novas) has built a career in the visual arts, combining artistic practice with curatorship, design and training. His artistic training took place at the Sociedade Nacional de Belas Artes, where he studied Drawing, Painting, Aesthetics, Theories of Contemporary Art and Art History, with Sá Nogueira, Jaime Silva, Cristina Azevedo Tavares, Margarida Calado and David Lopes as his teachers. At the same time, he attended serigraphy courses with António Inverno, metal engraving and theoretical studies such as the Estudos Gerais da Arrábida.
His career includes more than four dozen group exhibitions and around a dozen solo exhibitions, and he has been honoured with various awards throughout his career. In March 2025, he was awarded the medal of merit for his artistic and cultural career by the municipality of Santarém.
He was a founding member and president of Perspectivas - Grupo de Artes Plásticas, which organised many exhibitions, conferences and colloquia in Santarém. He also developed set designs for theatre and organised workshops and training courses in drawing, serigraphy, photography and engraving, with a special focus on artistic mediation and training audiences.
Between 1987 and 2001, he worked as a graphic designer for Santarém City Council and collaborated with CNEMA. Later, from 2001 to 2014, he was creative director at MBV Design.
Carlos Amado is also active in the field of exhibition curation and cultural programming. Since 2014, he has curated the Casa do Brasil / Casa Pedro Álvares Cabral in Santarém, and until 2018 also the Palácio Landal, promoting visual arts exhibitions with a focus on highlighting contemporary artists and dialogue with cultural heritage.
